Vice President, Underwriting and Loss Prevention

Witt/Kieffer has been exclusively retained by The Beacon Mutual Insurance Company, Providence, RI, to assist in the recruitment of a Vice President, Underwriting and Loss Prevention.  The Beacon is the largest writer of workers' compensation insurance in the state of Rhode Island and they enjoy a nationwide reputation for superior loss control and claims services.

The Vice President, Underwriting and Loss Prevention will have direct supervision over underwriting and loss prevention managers as well as the regulatory relations staff.  Responsibilities will include developing strategic policies and guidelines; preparing annual budgets and financial reports for the division; and establishing leading-edge best practices measurements to ensure customer service and quality.  Additionally, a commitment to integrity in all dealings is critical.

Successful candidates will have a minimum of ten years related insurance industry management experience and expert knowledge of workers compensation underwriting and profit and loss management.

Director of Underwriting, Workers' Compensation, North Florida

Position Overview

Our client, a major regional corporation and industry leader, has an immediate career opportunity available for an experienced Underwriting Management professional. This newly created position reports directly to the VP of WC Business Operations and will provide ongoing leadership, management and direction to the Workers’ Compensation Underwriting function, including Loss Control and Premium Audit. Managing a total staff of 12, the Director of Underwriting will be responsible for providing technical leadership in the review, assessment, development and implementation of policies, procedures and operational processes for the Department to help support the continued growth and market expansion of the business. This hands-on management position will be expected to quickly establish credibility internally as a Subject Matter Expert for the function and as a trusted business partner to other areas of the company such as Sales and Marketing, and Finance. In addition to functioning as a working manager, the Director of Underwriting will develop and implement plans and activities that focus on three key areas:

 

  • Product Line Revenue and Profitability

  • Product Line Production, Performance, Reporting and Quality Control

  • Risk Mitigation and Loss Control

 

Position qualifications

 

  •  10+ years of relevant experience in Workers’ Compensation underwriting with a major corporation in the Insurance, Healthcare, or Financial Services industries with 5 years of experience in staff management.

  • Extensive knowledge of Workers’ Compensation products, underwriting standards/best practices, applicable statutory requirements and administrative procedures; working knowledge of P&C underwriting guidelines.

  • Strong leadership, relationship management and client services skills that support the capability to effectively build and develop collaborative relationships with all levels of senior management across the company.

  • The ability to quickly establish internal credibility as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and build rapport and trust in effectively managing and working in a matrix environment.

  • Superior communications skills encompassing oral, written and executive presentation, as well as, strong influencing, negotiating and facilitation and decision-making skills.

  • Strong organizational, analytical and financial management skills combined with proven business acumen.

  • Knowledge/experience in the implementation of continuous quality improvement principles and techniques.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration or a relevant discipline and/or equivalent work experience and professional development; an MBA or Master’s Degree in a related area is preferred.

  • CPCU certification is strongly preferred.

 

This position provides an attractive compensation program including base salary and management incentive bonus. An excellent relocation program is also available.
